If you love your pet and want to capture a special moment with them, our paw-tograph pottery sessions offer a unique way to create a personalised keepsake. Whether you have a dog or a cat, this experience lets you and your furry friend leave a lasting impression on a beautiful pottery piece. I recently had the pleasure of working with Betty, my lovely boxer dog, and I want to share how the process unfolds from start to finish.

Choosing Your Pottery Piece

When you arrive at our studio in Ashford, Kent, the first step is to select the pottery item you want to personalise. We offer a variety of pieces, including plates, bowls, pet food bowls and tiles, all ready to be transformed with your pet’s pawprint. This choice is important because it determines how you’ll use your keepsake—whether as a decorative item or a functional piece in your home.

For Betty’s, I chose a simple round plate, perfect for displaying on a stand or hanging on the wall. The pottery is painted and glazed with high quality materials and is designed for everyday use.

Making the Pawprint

The highlight of the session is capturing your pet’s pawprint. We use a paw-safe, water-based underglaze paint that is gentle on your pet’s skin and easy to clean off. Betty was calm and cooperative, which made the process smooth and enjoyable.

Here’s how we do it:

  • Gently apply the paint to your pet’s paw using a soft brush.

  • Help your pet step onto the pottery piece carefully to leave a clear print.

  • Clean your pet’s paw immediately after to avoid any mess.

This step creates a unique and personal mark that reflects your pet’s character. Each pawprint is one of a kind, making your pottery truly special.

Decorating and Refining Your Piece

After the pawprint is made, you have two options. You can book a studio session to decorate and refine your pottery piece yourself, or you can leave it with me to complete the work. Many pet owners enjoy adding their own artistic touches, such as painting their pet’s name, adding paw motifs, or choosing colours that match their home decor.

With Betty's, I added delicate details around the pawprint, with dog bones and her name and finished the plate with a glossy glaze. The final product was both beautiful and functional, ready to be cherished for years.

Why Choose a Paw-tograph Session?

Creating a personalised pottery piece with your pet’s pawprint is more than just a craft activity. It’s a way to celebrate the bond you share with your dog or cat. Here are some reasons why this experience is meaningful:

  • Lasting memory: Your pet’s pawprint is a snapshot in time that you can keep forever.

  • Unique gift: These personalised items make thoughtful presents for pet lovers, especially around Christmas.

  • Fun experience: The session is relaxed and enjoyable for both you and your pet.

Tips for a Successful Paw-tograph Session

To make the most of your session, consider these practical tips:

  • Bring your pet’s favourite treats to keep them calm and happy.

  • Choose a pottery piece that fits your lifestyle and space.

  • Book your session in advance, especially during busy seasons like Christmas.

A Special Moment with Betty

Working with Betty was a joy. She posed perfectly for her pawprint, showing how well pets can adapt to this creative process. Seeing her pawprint on the plate reminded me how pets leave their mark on our hearts—and now, on pottery too.
